Tell Us We're Home Blog Tour - Marina Budhos Guest Post

Even though I said there was supposed to be a hiatus, this post was scheduled way before that thought crossed my mind. So here is a guest post from the lovely Marina, author of Tell Us We're Home. :D

Enjoy!

Which character was your favorite to write and why (and how you developed them) and which do you relate to more?

That’s a hard one to answer, since I grew to like all three, very much, and think that there’s a bit of me in all three. However, let’s put it this way: Lola was a blast, insofar as she just pounced on to the page, and never left. Her energy, her voice, was right there, from the get go. I wrote her material the fastest, which seemed apt for her. I always knew she would be obsessed with history, and had a fast mouth. I knew she'd land in trouble somehow, but I wasn't exactly sure how. My favorite scenes to write were later, when she really crashes and is in the therapist’s office and her moxie boldness isn’t serving her anymore.

But I will say it was Maria who began as the most distant and truly grew on me. Her pining for Tash, her accompanying her mother on job interviews, her slow political awakening, felt wonderful to write. I loved writing the scene where she sees Tash's house and encounters his parents--that felt very natural to me, and perhaps drew on my own sense of outsideness. I also just enjoyed figuring out where she would take herself, what kinds of new and sometimes painful insights she learned along the way.

Jaya always began as the main character, and so in a sense, you could say she was whom I was closest, or most intimate with. I felt as if I knew her, knew the way she saw the world, and how she felt, especially about her mother. Writing her was about tunneling inwards, understanding her inner landscape, the imagery of her past, which was so vivid to her.

Thanks for stopping by, Marina. :D Hope you enjoyed this last (not for long) post.

Back to hiatus-ness(?).

Fused Blog Tour - Kari Lee Townsend Guest Post

Today, for a blog tour, I have Kari Lee Townsend on my blog.

I asked her "What Her Favorite Childhood Book Was and Her Favorite Memory With It?
Here's what she had to say.
--------------------
Childhood Books & The Memories That Go With Them

A person's childhood goes by so quickly. I have four children, and I'm watching theirs go by way too quickly for my liking. Childhood is a time for believing that anything is possible. For discovering the wonders of the world. For setting off on new adventures and not being afraid. Books are one of the best ways to experience things you never thought possible.

I remember loving to read almost anything because it felt like I was stepping into a whole other world. It was like getting swept away in an amazing movie, and I hated to see it end. I don't really have one favorite book, but I do have a favorite series. I was addicted to the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. The thought that kids so young could venture off on great adventures, facing all sorts of dangers, yet solving the mystery on their own in the end was so exciting.

I have one sister and one brother. When we were really young, my dad was in the air force. But once he retired and worked as an air traffic controller for the FAA, we finally put down roots and lived next door to our cousins growing up. I have always had an active imagination, but these books inspired me to come up with some pretty cool adventures for us all to play.

Even today, I still love a great mystery. In fact, my Samantha Granger books have a mystery in them as well. And I also write a cozy mystery series called The Fortune Teller Mystery Series with book one, Tempest in the Tea Leaves, coming out in August. To find out more about all my books, go to http://www.karileetownsend.com

Thanks so much for having me here today. This has been fun, and I hope all of you find a great book to curl up with that inspires you to live your own adventurous life :-)

Thank you, Kari, for coming here today! Hope you guys enjoyed it and be sure to read Fused: The Samantha Granger Experiment. Out Now!

Until next time,

Nyxen's Review of "Tell Us We're Home"

Tell Us We're Home by Marina Budhos
297 Pages
Atheneum 2010

Jaya, Maria, and Lola are just like the other eighth-grade girls in the wealthy suburb of Meadowbrook, New Jersey. They want to go to te spring dance, tehy love spending time with their best friends after school, sharing frappes and complaining about the other kids. But there's one big difference: All three are daughters of maids and nannies. And they go to school with the very same kids whose families their mothers work for.

That difference grows even bigger-and moer painful-when Jaya's motehr is accused of theft and Jaya's small, fragile world collapases.

When tensions about immigrants start to erupt, fracturing this perfect, serene suburb, all three girls are tested, as outsiders-and as friends. Each must find a place for herself in a town that barely notices she exists.

This book really wasn't one for me but I actually did enjoy it, nonetheless.

Tell Us We're Home tells the story of three immigrant girls who all have a few things in common: They're not from New Jeresey and their mothers are all nannies for the rich kids' family they girls go to school with.

They find each other when times get rough and they've stuck through it all. They just want to fit in, some more than the others but in the end they remember who their friends truly are. These three girls just don't know what to do when they're left alone, in this cruel, rich kid world, when their parents are in trouble.

I'm not really sure how to explain it but this book gives you hope, and an open mind about important issues. I highly reccomend it.

Marina Budhos did a tremendous job on this book.

I rate this book Four Stars.

Nyxen's Featured Book of the Week (3)

We have another week of Book of the Week. :) I haven't done Blogger of the Week and I am super sorry. Forgive me?

Well, let's get on with the feature!

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
217 Pages Paperback
Scholastic 1978

This book...OMG! This book is just one amazing piece of literary genius. (That did not make sense but stick with me.) I remember when I wasn't a big reader back then and my uncle-who's only four years older than me- wanted me to read The Westing Game. I didn't want to because, well, I didn't like reading. But then I read it just to humor him and OH. MY. GOD.

This book is just amazing. I wish I could put many, many, many exclaimation marks just to prove it.... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a small summary I got from Wikipedia.
Sixteen individuals who are mysteriously chosen to live in the Sunset Towers apartment building on the shore of Lake Michigan come together to hear the will of the self-made millionaire, Sam Westing. The will takes the form of a puzzle, dividing the sixteen heirs into eight pairs, giving each pair a different set of clues, and challenging them to solve the mystery of who killed Sam Westing. As an incentive, each heir is given $10,000 to play the game. Whoever solves the mystery will inherit Sam Westing's 200 million dollar fortune, along with his place in society.

I highly suggest this book to sleuths, future detectives, mystery fanatics or anyone who wants something worth remembering.

READ IT!

Nyxen's Review of "Trickster's Girl"

Trickster's Girl by Hilari Bell
288 Pages
Houghton Mifflin Books (January 3rd, 2011)

A century after 9/11, in a high-tech, high-security world, magic is the last thing on anyone's mind.

Something bad is happening. Trees are dying. People are getting sick. Fifteen-year-old Kelsa's father died from cancer-a particularly aggressive case, the doctors said. Science has no answers.

Then Kelsa meets a boy. He's the most beautiful boy Kelsa's ever seen, but he's also very strange. He claims to be Raven, the mythological creature. He keeps going on about magic and an impending ecological disaster and that Kelsa must help him save the world.

Maybe he's crazy.

Or maybe he's telling her truths people have forgotten. And maybe she should help him, even if doing so means risking her own life.

Trickster's Girl takes place in 2098, in America, where things haven't changed a lot from today's society. Security is tighter, and Earth is changing, dying. Kelsa is a regular girl who experiences a tragedy. Her father dies and she starts to become represssive. In an effort to take a stand and rebel, she steals her father's ashes to have a proper burial at a park. But at the park, she meets someone, someone different.

Raven, a shape-shifting mythological being, who needs Kelsa's help to cure the tree plague and all the disasters happening to the Earth. But Kelsa can't really believe him because magic isn't something very easy to handle. It doesn't exist, very hard to believe. But Kelsa agrees to help Raven and go out on this expedition seeing as how she doesn't belong anywhere after he father died.

Trickster's Girl is an dystopian novel that really is interesting. I loved the idea that the author used something that is happening in our everyday life, global warming, and how she intermixed it with a dash of fantasy. It was interesting but up until a certain extent.

Kelsa wasn't a character that was like 'WOW' to me. She did an exceptional job but that was it. She didn't captivate me as much as I would have liked. Raven, though, he was interesing. I loved him in a way that made up for Kelsa...Does that sound bad? He was quirky, mysterious and just plain weird. I enjoyed reading about him.

The adventures they have together were okay for my taste. Kelsa had to escape from Raven's enemies about a thousand times (not really) just because she was trying to help. I liked their adventure to save civilization and Earth but it just didn't captivate me as much.

I'm sure other people would enjoy it and as a whole I would probably give it Four and a half stars......

But I wasn't too fond with it so I rate it Three Stars

Nyxen's Featured Book of the Week (2)

I would say that this feature totally failed last week.
But I am back and still deciding how I should format this post....Oi vey (sp)?

This week's Book of the Week is....
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

I haven't read this book but I want to. It's a classic! :D It seems very interesting though, how the main character is kicked out of prep school and is suddenly thrust into the adult world.

But either way, this is the Book of the week and I think you should read it. If you haven't read it go do it! And then tell me what you thought of it.

I don't know what else to write....I really have to start getting better at these feature things.

Until next time,

Nyxen's Featured Blogger of the Week (3)

It's the third of this fabulous feature.

Today I want to feature two special people.

Today I am featuring Julie and Lanna from Bloggers-Heart-Books.

I've known Julie since the early days of Jackson Pearce's chat and she's pretty awesome. Or in Harmony's words : MEGA-AWESOME.

Julie is very sweet yet sarcastic and an excellent blogger from what I've seen. She knows what she wants and she goes for it-in book senses. She loves to reading, like everyone else book blogging, so it's a given that she's awesome.

I remember we used to critique each other's things, but I can't remember what stopped. Overall I say you should get to know her.

Lanna is also the co-blogger to Bloggers Heart Books. She was the primary founder with a bucnh of other girls before it just became Lanna and Julie. Lanna is a little older than Julie but their chemistry and blogging style.

I don't know Lanna all that well but she has been to Jackson's Chats and she's very cool.I love both their reviews and all their features.

They're blog is something amazing and it's still climbing to the top. I say go to their blog and follow it, comment it, read it..but not in that order of course.

Just go! You won't regret it. :D

Nyxen's Featured Blogger of the Week (2)

It's the second week of 2011 and I am going strong!

Today we have another blogger to feature on my blog. She's pretty popular and very nice.

Harmony's Radiant Reads is our next BLOGGER OF THE WEEK!

Harmony is a very amazing blogger AND person. She's funny, quirky, and a hilarious sense of humor.

She's my first ever blogger buddy that I made in this universe.

Harmony writes really eccentric reviews and posts. They really show you what kind personality she has and what type of person she is in general. She puts herself into her posts. Harmony works really hard at what she does and I'm sure she will continue with what she does for a long time (or I think she will. SHE BETTER!)

Besides being an awesome blogger, she's also an amazing CP. I throw my ideas at her and she's not afraid to speak her mind. She will tell me whether they suck or not and that's what I love. She's truthful and that's all there is to it.

You should definitely check out her blog if you haven't yet. She's someone whom I admire, even if I do call her kid. We're just a year apart.

Check her blog out and until next time,

Nyxen's Featured Blogger of the Week (1)

I want to do something on this blog that I haven't really done before. I want to show my appreciation to other bloggers. I want to give one a blog a post all about their awesomeness. That's what I've decided to do.

First up is a blogger whom I completely adore.

Let me introduce you to Reading Vacation!

Melina is an eleven-year-old girl who I first discovered when I was starting out in the blogging world myself. I thought it was completely insane that a ten-year-old (she was ten back then) was among the interent, no less than reading and blogging. But then I thought about it and I'm like, "Oh, wait, I was among the interwebz when I was ten also." Melina is this cute, adorbale pre-teen girl (I think pre-teen) whom I admire so much. I love the fact that she is an avid reader and isn't afraid to announce it to the whole world.

Melina is a great friend and an even greater blogger. I just wish we would be able to talk more to each other.

She's going to go places, Melina is. I can already imagine her a successful whatever she wants to be. Her blog is very successful already and I'm sure that isn't the end.

Melina, you are one truly amazing girl! Keep doing what you're doing and never falter from it. :D

And that was the first installment of Featured Blogger of teh week. :D

Until next time,

Nyxen & Friends on Christmas

(Please ignore this crappy banner. I fail at photoshop when I don't try.)

Happy Christmas everyone!!! How was everyone's Christmas Eve? I know for sure that not a lot of people will be on here on CHristmas but oh well. I'd still like to spread some christmas cheer on my blog. Today, you will hear from authors and bloggers on their favorite things about christmas. :D

Christmas is magical, and I'm not talking about Santa. It feels like everyone is in an extra-special good mood this time of year.
There are decorations in houses and shops - twinkly lights outside and beautiful trees inside. Oh, and don't forget all the yummy cookies
and treats to eat. No wonder everyone is so happy! We all get excited to find the perfect gift for our best friends and our family.
It's always fun to watch them open what we picked out for them. I guess what I like best is that Christmas makes people happy.
Merry Christmas!
-- Melina @ Reading Vacation

Christmas is hands down my favorite holiday. I am a total loser for Christmas songs and sparkly decorations and buying people presents! -- Jackson Pearce

Personally, Christmas in my eyes, is the best holiday of the year. Families and friends come together on this day to celebrate the joyous feeling of love and gift-giving. Of course I love presents but, my favorite thing about this holiday living in NY, are the festive lights and ornaments in the city. The joyous colors bring me happiness and warmth. So, I'd have to say, the Christmas atmosphere is my favorite part of this fun filled December! -- Eleni @ La Femme Readers

Christmas is an excuse to give for the joy of giving. It's the one time of year where the most unlikely people are inspired to random kindness. The time of year where we take stock in what we've done, how we've behaved and how we want to change with the New Year. It is truly a time when we think of others, where the expression of love transends those who are close to us. -- LM Preston

I adore Christmas and the holidays, mainly because I love GIVING people things. Yeah, getting is nice, but I'm one of those people who likes people jumping up and down excitedly because I got them the perfect thing. I probably spend way too much money on presents - it's the only time of the year where I really go shopping, and I spend months looking for the right present. (Once September hits, Christmas shopping is fair game.) I'm really excited this year - my friends and I are spending all day on the 18th doing a Christmas movie marathon and exchanging gifts and eating cookies. It's gonna be a LOT of fun. -- Nicole @ Word for Teens

Christmas is the one day of the year that our family does absolutely nothing…but we do it together! We spend the entire day in our pajamas, opening presents, cuddling up and watching movies, and eating the candy we got in our stockings. It’s my favorite day of the year! -- Kimberly Derting

My favorite thing about Christmas is the traditions. In my family that means watching White Christmas and reading The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve. I've moved out of my parents house and have a family of my own now- but we still have the same traditions! -- Kate @ A Reader's Ramblings

My favorite thing about Christmas is getting to drive around Christmas Eve looking at everyones Christmas lights and decorations. -- Cassie @ Vamps, Weres, and Cassay

My favorite part of Christmas has to be spending special time with family. The lights, the tree, the baking goodies, the music and wrapping gifts. It all makes me feel warm inside! Throw in a good book before the fireplace and it can't get any better! -- Sophie Jordan

My favorite part of Christmas is Christmas Eve, just before bed, when all the lights go out and the tree is left alone, twinkling with the promise of the morning. The anticipation is 90% of the fun! -- Kiersten White

What I like best about Christmas is the baking. I know it might sound bad that I'm not saying being with family... But I'm already with them all time!!! The special baked goods, though, are for the holidays only!
I love to bake, it's a lot of fun for me. And I always try to create something new every year. Then there are my grandmother's cookies and fudge. Oh, my! I just love it all!
-- Courtney Reads @ Courtney-Reads

I love the holiday season because 1) I have so much free time and 2) I have so much free time I can actually hang out with my friends and family! Hehe! Does that make me a bad person? Ahaha, I think it does. I pretty much only have time for my friends and family during the holidays!

I also love the icy beauty of December. I think that no matter what religion you are or holiday you celebrate, you can enjoy the pretty snow! I luff how universal December is.
-- Brent @ Naughty Book Kitties

Happy Christmas everyone!

Until next time,

Nyxen Feels Off These Days

I don't know what it is. Ever since November (30 Days of Harry Potter) I've felt very off on my blog. I think it was because November was just a hectic time for me that I didn't have time to read or plan anything amazing on my blog.

But now you guys are suffering my non-posting frenzy...if you guys mind. I've just been drawing blanks on what to post on my blog. :/

I think I have bloggers-block. Either that or I'm too lazy to post anything. But that isn't the case because I don't know what to post. And it's also been worse ever since the accident.

But that will stop! I promise. I'm going to try and post EVERYDAY next year. :D What do you guys think? I really want to post everyday but now, I don't know what I will do.

I will try to have more author interviews! And maybe a something involving bloggers? I'm not sure yet.

Now that I see it, I think this post was just an excuse to have on my blog. *siiigh* I'm hopeless.

Haha, well, until next time,

Nyxen Really Hates Finals

Hey, guys! It's that time of year again and I'm not talking about Christmas. I'm talking about the tests we take at the end of the semester (I like to say term) before Christmas break. Finals or Mid-terms. Either way, they're very hard tests in which I do not want to take. But it must be done. Today I'm taking my Physics Final. GRRRRR.

This whole week will be dedicated to me studying for my mid-terms because I NEED excellent grades. This means that this whole week will be empty on my blog. :/ I would have had some scheduled posts but my 30 Days of Harry Potter event wore me out, literally. Or was that school?

But as I said, though, Christmas break is coming so I'll have MORE time to read and review books for the remainder of the month and for 2011!

I can't believe it's almost the end of the year. And I can't believe I've been blogging since April. This is the longest I've kept an actual blog/website. I feel accomplished. :P

Well, until next week,

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

30 Days of Harry Potter (Day 30 - TheGuidetoGoodBooks)

I am sad to report that today is the last day of Harry Potter Takeover on my blog. How did you guys like it? Today, to kick off our last day, is one of my very good friends.

Let's welcome Faith to the blog, guys!

--------------------

The Harry Potter Books.

The phenomena that takes the entire world by storm.

How long has it really been since these books were turned into movies? It’s already been around
ten years. The last of the Harry Potter series is coming to a close and then that’s it. After that the
only thing we have to remember it is the books on our shelves, and the theme park in Florida.
Wait, what did you say? You want me to back up? You haven’t heard of the theme park in Florida’s
Universal and Islands of Adventure. Go on Google. (:

My favorite character during the whole Harry Potter would have to be Hermione. She’s strong,
smart, she gets the guys farther. In the Harry Potter 7 Part 1 Ron makes an excellent point on her,
but I know people haven’t watched it yet so I’m just going to keep it to myself. Anyway, she knows
almost ever spell in the book and pushes Ron and Harry toward their goals and their dreams as she
tries to accomplish her own. I think I can relate most to Hermione, maybe that’s why I like her so
much. It’s just something about her that I think that I would do, or say, or whatever.

My favorite scene? Wow. I would have to really think that one through. When they went into the
forest behind the school (whose name slips me at this moment) and they see Haggrid’s spider. Then
Ron freaks out. He-he. His face was priceless there. I think I may actually get a picture of it to go
with this post. And because I couldn’t find the face, here is a little drawn cartoon OF him freaking
out. That works too, right?

So to wrap up this very boring rambling guest post. I will ask a series of questions for you the
readers;

How did you react when you first heard/read about Harry Potter?

What made you say “hey, I’ll try to read the books/watch the movie”?

Who’s your favorite character?

And, what are you going to do for the premier of Harry Potter 7 part 2?

That’s all the time I have!

So long!

M.A.Chase, The Guide to Good Books

--------------------

Thank you so much, Faith! You can catch more of her over at her BLOG.

And that is the end of this big event. Thank you everyone who participated! I hope you all enjoyed it. Do you have any questions, comments, or concerns? Just leave them below on any post over the past month and I'll get back to you!

Tomorrow I will post the winners of all the giveaways mentioned here. :D

Until next time,
